Many riders prefer freehubs that make louder noises when coasting, and some even adopt incorrect methods to make their freehubs louder. This is a mistake. As a crucial part of the bicycle, it’s understandable why beginners like louder freehubs. Certain high-end freehubs produce louder sounds, and many riders consider this a sign of high performance or high quality. For example, some high-end freehub designs produce crisper and louder sounds when coasting. These freehubs typically use higher precision ratchet mechanisms, offering quicker engagement and better transmission efficiency. Riders like this sound not only because it sounds cool but also because it represents higher mechanical performance and responsiveness. Of course, some riders simply enjoy the sound, finding it makes the riding experience more enjoyable and fun. A loud freehub sound can sometimes provide a sense of rhythm and motivation, enhancing the joy of riding. A loud freehub can help riders stand out in a group ride, showcasing their personality and taste. Different brands and models of freehubs have different sound characteristics, and some riders choose specific sounding freehubs to express their individuality.
What’s inside a freehub? How to make freehub sound more crisp?
Currently, mainstream freehub designs include ratchet and pawl types. You can clearly see the differences between the two structures in the diagrams below. The sound actually comes from the internal impacts of the ratchet and pawl. If you replace the ratchet and pawl with those having more teeth, you can achieve a crisper freehub sound.
Freehub is not necessarily the louder the better
Indeed, a loud freehub sound can alert pedestrians and other riders, contributing to improved riding safety. Especially in crowded urban environments or on narrow trails, a loud freehub sound can make others aware of an approaching rider from behind, preventing collisions or accidents. However, SUMLON believes that in terms of performance, a louder freehub when coasting does not necessarily mean a better freehub.
How to make freehub sound louder?
Some premium brand freehubs do sound loud, but this does not mean that a louder freehub is a better freehub. Generally, a very loud freehub when coasting could be due to a lack of lubrication in the freehub. After several rides in the rain, the lubricant in the freehub may gradually be washed away by rainwater. At the same time, the bearings in the hub might also become very sticky. In other words, if you want your freehub to sound louder, a very simple method is to disassemble the freehub and remove the lubricant. However, SUMLON does not recommend doing this.
